Police are charging two teenagers with murder in the death of a law enforcement officer killed in Panola County.

Constable Raye Hawkins, 57, of Courtland, Miss., died in a head-on collision Thursday, Dec. 12. Sheriff’s deputies were chasing a stolen SUV when the truck crashed into Hawkins’ vehicle in Batesville, Miss., reports WREG.

The two teenagers in the stolen truck, Darion Dogan, 16, and Jonathan Taylor, 15, were arrested and charged with felony murder.

Because of the seriousness of the charges, they will be tried as adults, District Attorney John Champion said.

“You see so much of this happen with these young kids who, in my opinion, don’t care or don’t understand the value of human life,” Champion told WREG.

Dogan and Taylor stole the SUV, a 2018 Chevrolet Colorado, in neighboring Tallahatchie County and fled from a deputy who spotted them. Hawkins was joining in the chase when the crash occurred.

“The speed we believe the vehicle was going, there was nothing he could do,” Champion told Fox13. “They crashed right into him and crushed him under the vehicle.”

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
