Peaceful protest undeterred by bogus claims of violence
This afternoon’s march in honor of George Floyd symbolically began at the Vicksburg Police Department at 3 p.m.
The peaceful march went west up Veto Street and then turned right onto Walnut. People in the solemn crowd chanted “I can’t breathe” as they moved all the way to Grove where they turned left and marched down to the Washington Street Park where the farmers market is held.
About 400 people attended the peaceful march. Not a single incident of violence was recorded or seen at the event. A couple of businesses in Vicksburg boarded up their windows fearing violence, and they are receiving a mix of unpleasant comments and support from their fellow community members.
A couple of reports on social media are trying to claim there were acts of violence or wanton rioting. Those claims are unfounded and untrue. Additionally, there are no reports of any windows broken or any acts of violence anywhere in town related to the protest. Anyone saying anything different should call the police and file a report.
