The Vicksburg Pickleball Invitational was held Saturday at the new courts at Halls Ferry Park. The single-day mixed doubles tournament included 96 players across seven states.

What is Pickle Ball, you dare ask? The game started in 1965 over a summer weekend by a group of dads tasked with entertaining bored children. The family attempted to play badminton, could not find a shuttlecock, and instead improvised with a Wiffle ball. It’s a combination of Tennis, Ping Pong, and Badminton, with a badminton-sized court, a giant, more rigid ping pong paddle, and similar Tennis rules. The sport has recently gained popularity amongst the older crowd but has also begun traction with younger players.

Soon after the opening of the Pickleball courts in September 2021, the Vicksburg Pickleball Association was formed to help organize the city’s first tournament.

The association hopes to host another tournament in the fall.
