Changes made by the Mississippi Tax Commission will alter the calculations of property values in Warren County. Some may see an increase in taxes owed.

Due to an increase in costs of building materials, manuals used on the County Tax Assessor’s office have become outdated explained county tax assessor Ben Luckett during a Warren County Board of Supervisors meeting on Monday.

The changes are expected to mainly affect residents who live in newer neighborhoods and larger homes.

According to Luckett, about 80%-85% of homeowners in the county will see a change in their property values which will result in more taxes owed.

Those who are 65 and older should see no change if they have filed for a homestead exemption. Enrollment period for exemptions will take place between Jan. 1 – Apr. 1, 2022.

Letters to property owners will be sent out in March. Owners can then contest the increase and have someone from the county tax assessor’s office reevaluate their property value.
