A Mississippi sheriff’s deputy who was shot in the line of duty sent a message to his supporters the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Deputy Brad Sullivan was shot in the head Sept. 5 during a shootout that left several Madison County Sheriff’s deputies wounded. The gunman was also wounded in the exchange, the Clarion Ledger reports.

Sullivan was the most seriously wounded of six deputies shot that day. After being airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Sullivan was in critical condition for weeks. He was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, according to his brother.

“I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all of your prayer and support,” Sullivan wrote on the Praying for Deputy Brad Sullivan Facebook page. “Please keep me in your prayers!! I will continue to work hard on my rehabilitation and I’m looking forward to being back at home, soon. Also, I want to thank every deputy that has been with me in the hospital.”

The message followed a brief video that shows Sullivan taking a few tentative steps with the help of an aide. Posted above the video is this:

“If you don’t believe in miracles
If you don’t believe our father makes the impossible, possible.
If you think that God cannot deliver you from temporary situation that seems permanent,
Then you talk to my friend, Brad Sullivan.”

The shooter, Edgar Egbert, was charged with kidnapping and attempted murder of the six law enforcement officers, among other charges, and faces life behind bars. According to testimony during his arraignment, Egbert targeted the deputies and shot them with a fully automatic rifle. Investigators recovered 89 shell casings from where he was standing.

The standoff with deputies followed Egbert’s alleged kidnapping of a man he believed was having an affair with his wife, according to numerous reports.
