Restaurant Review: Southern Sisters Café & Catering

Published

on

My mom brought me to lunch, and I just discovered this hidden gem for the first time in my life. Down 61N, by the loaded tea shop and Zips, there’s a little building that serves comfort food. I had my doubts, because I’m not always impressed with cafe food. Nonetheless, I ventured on to try new things.

I was SO wrong. I step inside, and my first sign should’ve been just how packed this little building was. Folks were waiting for a table in this little café! There were 15 to go orders sold and sent out the door in the 10 minutes I was in line for food. They were selling out of almost everything. I was so glad we had called ahead.

Southern Sisters Café fried chicken.

We ordered a lunch plate that will come with the meat of your choice, two vegetables, a roll, dessert, and sweet tea. I ordered fried chicken, fried okra, and mashed potatoes and gravy. My mom ordered the same thing, except she got Mac and cheese. Everything was steaming hot even though it was being served from a line. The fried okra was crispy and seasoned to the nines. The outside had that sharp crunch, not soggy at all, and the okra itself had the perfect silky texture we all know and love. If you say you don’t like fried okra, grow up. You’re wrong. It wasn’t overdone to make it mushy, it wasn’t undercooked where you’re struggling to chew it. These ladies know their way around a frying pan is all I’m going to say on it.

The Mac and cheese was phenomenal too. Some baked Mac and cheeses are dry, and flavorless. This Mac and cheese should be an example of how that classic dish should be served. Every bite had a creamy, flavorful punch that Chuck Norris himself couldn’t have competed with. The layer of baked cheese on top was thicker than Honey Boo Boo’s mother. It was really delicious.

The fried chicken is really what stole the show, though. This fried chicken gives Colonel Sanders and the original 11 herbs and spices a run for their money. We both got white meat, and i expected it to be a little dry. I was wrong. One bite out of that chicken breast had all that juiciness dripping down my shirt. I wasn’t even ashamed. It felt like a badge of honor to have a stain from that delicious chicken. This chicken was hot, juicy, flavorful, big, country, and beautiful. Will Smith couldn’t slap as hard as this chicken did. Had me wanting to eat the bones when I was done because I just didn’t want to be finished with my meal.

I didn’t even talk about the service that went above and beyond for us. Our hands were full with a baby and diaper bag in tow. They carried our drinks, plates, and the highchair to the table for us. They brought my son some Fruit Loops and took turns entertaining him so we could finish our meals. They checked on us about a hundred times and made sure we were alright. Those women are angels sent straight from heaven above. I cannot recommend southern sisters enough. Thank y’all so much for a great experience and great food!
