Vicksburg resident and former Warren Central High School standout football player Vertez Shorter is preparing for an outstanding junior season this fall at Reinhardt University.

Shorter made his debut season at Reinhardt in the Fall of 2021 where he adjusted to a new and harder system quickly.

“It was much tougher than what I’m used to and I didn’t have the support system that I had at Hinds,” Shorter said. “Camp went good after the first few days but it took a while to adjust to getting up so early and getting everything done before class.”

By September, Shorter quickly adjusted to playing on a higher level as he helped Reinhardt defeat Warner University 45-0 in the second game of the season where he registered two sacks and was named the team’s defensive player of the week.

“I felt a lot of relief because people wanted to see how I was going to perform and I ended up doing well,” Shorter said.

Shorter repeated his performance into the following week when he grabbed another two sacks in a 52-7 victory over Campbellsville.

Overall, Shorter helped Reinhardt to a 9-3 season in 2021 and ended the year with 27 tackles and four sacks.

Next week, Shorter will return to school to enter his junior season with plenty of experience on the field.

“I feel like I now have to step up and take on a leadership role and I’ve been staying in shape and conditioning well and staying focused,” Shorter said.

Shorter is a 2019 graduate of WC and helped the Vikings to a playoff appearance in his senior year under Head Coach Josh Morgan. He went on to play for Hinds CC before heading to Reinhardt.
