After wrapping up a successful basketball career at Vicksburg High School, Destini Sims has decided to take her talents to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

Sims, surrounded by family, friends and coaches, signed her letter of intent on Thursday, officially making the next move to become a college athlete.

With offers coming from Mississippi Valley State University, Southwest Mississippi CC, Copiah-Lincoln CC and Pearl River CC, Sims felt that Gulf Coast was the best place for her to advance her career for the next couple of years.

“The great atmosphere of the school and the coaches made me feel like family,” Sims said. “I want to be at a program where the coaches would push me to be a better athlete so I feel that MGCCC is the best fit for me.”

In the last three years, Sims has starred at VHS under head coach Troy Stewart. She was a big contributor of the Missy Gators making it deep into the playoffs each season.

Sims, who averaged 11 points per game, proved on multiple occasions that she is an all-around athlete. She managed leading the team in assists in some games, and then turning around and leading the team in points.

The Missy Gators advanced to the third round of the playoffs this season with the help of Sims. She always remained a team player who depended on her teammates to make big things happen.

Now that Sims is done with basketball at VHS, she will soon be playing on a higher level but she never forgot those who helped her along the way.

“I wouldn’t be here without my family, friends, coaches, and teammates so I thank them for everything over the years and I’m fully ready to show my skills on the next level,” Sims said.
