Smith and King have taken their talents to Jefferson County High School
Former Porter’s Chapel Academy basketball assistant coach DeAndre King and player Zy Smith are now a part of the Jefferson County High School basketball team.
After helping the Lady Eagles reach the second round of the playoffs last season and being named VDN’s Girl’s Junior High Basketball Coach of the Year, King made his official move to Fayette, Mississippi where he is looking to make an impact.
“The coach that I am with now believes in me, she speaks wisdom to me, and we are a great team together in our mission to create a successful program,” King said. When I mentioned to her that I wanted to be a part of her staff, within 24 hours she made it happen and I love the atmosphere here and I’m ready for the season to begin.”
Smith who averaged 17 points per game last season for PCA also made the transition to JC after spending two years with the Lady Eagles.
“Porter’s Chapel Academy will always hold a special place in my heart,” Smith said. “I will cherish the memories and friendships from my time there. As I embark on this new chapter, I am excited to return to where it all started: Jefferson County School District,” said Smith. “Since my return, my teammates have embraced me and made me feel at home. Thanks to our great coaches, we had an opportunity to play together at several summer camps and we are all anxious to start the season, especially since we will play in a newly renovated gymnasium.”
Smith said the timing of returning to her roots could not have come at a better time.
“The timing of my return could not have been better. I get to finish my high school basketball career playing in front of my friends and family. It is like I am living a dream while fulfilling my purpose.”
The Tigers season is set to begin in early November. VDN will have a close eye on Smith and King’s progress this season.
