If you’re interested in expressing yourself through art, the Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation (1302 Adams St.) has something for you.

Oct. 16 at 9 a.m., the SCHF will host “More Than a Painting” art workshop led by Nancy Mitchell, an artist and educator with 35  years experience.

Mitchell will lead attendees to paint a memory that will last them throughout the fall and winter seasons.

“We have these workshops regularly,” said SCHF director Stacey Massey. “She comes to Vicksburg three times a year or so and does workshops. She calls them ‘More than a Painting’ workshops and gives canvas painting classes.”

If interested artists miss the Oct. 16 event, there will be another workshop at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 17. Both classes will provide the same experience, and participants take home a unique and personal piece of artwork to hang on their walls.

“They’ll get to learn about the artist Camille Pissaro,” Massey said, “and they’ll be able to paint a spring morning. She’s saying, ‘Let’s paint a spring morning to look at during the winter.'”

Registration for the workshop is $45 for SCHF members and $50 for non-members. To register, call the SCHF office at 601-631-2997 or email info@southernculture.org.

“This class is not only for advanced artists,” Massey said. “I’ve taken the class several times, and I’m not an artist, so I’m surprised when I end up with a painting that looks like the original. It’s a fun event that everyone can enjoy.”
