Southern Sisters to re-open; Southern Roots to permanently close

While both have been hit hard with the restrictions placed on them during the COVID-19 crisis, two local restaurants are taking different paths.

Popular Vicksburg restaurant Southern Sisters will re-open as soon as the state and local governments allow dine-in services to resume.

Diane Pennington and her sister, Terri McCall, have operated the lunch-time-only eatery at 815 U.S. Highway 61 North for more than a dozen years. Pennington said they miss their customers terribly.

“We are ready to reopen when we get the go-ahead,” she said. “We have a loyal group of customers who have supported us through the years.”

The hardest thing Pennington is dealing with is having a new grandchild she isn’t getting to see except online and in pictures.

Across town, Southern Roots, formally known as Bayou Marketplace, announced this week that they would not be reopening. In a Facebook post, owner Mandy Tanner said they “just could not get going.”

The turn-key business is for sale for anyone that might be interested. The business is located at 3428 Halls Ferry Road.
