Due to the COVID-19 pandemic that caused many sporting events to be canceled, Southwestern  College in Chula Vista, California, will not play football this fall in the 2020 season.

Southwestern College President Kindred Murillo confirmed the news Thursday citing “additional health and safety precautions.”

Not only is football suspended for Southwestern College, but contact sports will not resume until spring 2021. Canceling the Jaguars season seems to be a decision made by the administration because of effect that COVID-19 has made on the world and the many lives that have been lost.

Murillo made it clear that sports will resume,  just not this fall.

“It is important to note that spring 2021 is still an option for Jaguar Athletics, and our coaches can encourage our student athletes to focus on their training and academics,”  Murillo said in a statement. “Deferring to the spring will allow college and health professionals to be better prepared to take the needed steps to keep everyone safe.”

The Jaguars finished the 2019 football season with a 6-5 record under head coach Ed Carberry.
