Statement on officer-involved shooting with Capitol Police

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety issued a statement involving an officer-involved shooting by Capitol Police.

On Sunday, September 25th, 2022, Capitol Police Officers were involved in an officer involved shooting after attempting to initiate a traffic stop on E. Mayes St. in Jackson, Mississippi.

The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Jaylen Lewis, has succumbed to his injuries received in this incident. The officers involved are on administrative leave until such time as the internal
investigation is completed and they are approved to return to active service.

“An internal investigation into this incident is underway and the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting its own independent inquiry and will present its findings to the Attorney General’s office,” said Commissioner Sean Tindell. “Such incidents require a thorough investigation, scrutiny, and transparency. Therefore, any releasable information regarding this incident will be made public by the Department of Public Safety at the appropriate time.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is investigating and currently assessing this critical incident and gathering evidence. Since this is an ongoing investigation, no further comment will be made at this time.
