Straight-line winds probable early Friday morning, significant Arctic airmass early Monday
Straight-line winds on Friday and an Arctic airmass on Monday are coming our way.
The National Weather Service in Jackson is warning that straight-line winds early Friday morning may take out a lot of power lines. On their website, they stated there is the “Potential for numerous downed trees and powerlines resulting in numerous power outages.” This is significant because of the upcoming Arctic airmass that is expected early Sunday morning. Massive power outages will leave many people without heat during the Arctic blast.
The Vicksburg Warren School District has canceled school for Friday due to the high wind threat. High winds are especially threatening to high-profile vehicles like a school bus. They can be blown over or sideways during a wind gust.
Early Monday morning the temperature will drop below freezing and stay there until sometime Wednesday, according to the most recent update. “Dangerous cold expected,” is how the NWS in Jackson has described it. There is also a 30% chance for precipitation during the cold weather event.
The wind chill effect will cause the temperature to drop below zero. Frostbite and hypothermia are likely with prolonged exposure to the cold. Exposed water pipes will also be likely to burst if left unattended. Vicksburg will drop below freezing Monday morning and stay below freezing until at least Wednesday.
Efforts are being made county-wide to assist the homeless population and to identify vulnerable people in our community. The River City Rescue Mission will be setting up a shelter along with other locations around town.
If you find yourself in a dangerous situation with the cold do not hesitate to call 911. All area agencies are preparing for the weather and will assist you.
