Streetball: A victim of COVID again this year

The annual Randy Naylor Summer Program will not be happening again this summer due to COVID-19 concerns.

Vicksburg Police Chief Milton Moore confirmed on Tuesday morning that, unfortunately, the program will not be available this summer.

Moore said that numerous citizens have inquired but “we have to make sure it’s safe for everyone that’s participating.”

The annual summer program was originally started by Lt. Walter Beamon and Sgt. Bobby Jones as an outreach program for inner city youth. The late Randy Naylor took the program over following Beamon’s retirement. Following Naylor’s death in 2013, Sgt. Tommy Curtis stepped up to guide the program which was ultimately renamed in Naylor’s honor.

Hopefully the program can return in 2022, bigger and better than ever before.

Our youth needs the outlet and it’s an excellent opportunity for law enforcement to network and build relationships to mentor them.
