Suspect in Ken Karyl Avenue shooting death arraigned and given $1 million bond

On Friday at around 5 p.m., suspect Johnathan Jackson was arraigned by Municipal Court Judge Angela Carpenter for the shooting death of Demarcus Smith, 25, and was given a $1 million bond.

The Vicksburg Police Department responded to a shooting incident on Wednesday evening, May 10, at around 6 p.m. According to reports, officers were dispatched to the area of Ken Karyl Avenue after receiving a call about a male who had been shot.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old Demarcus Smith, was quickly transported to Merit Health River Region for emergency medical treatment. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) for further medical attention. Smith was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Authorities have revealed that one person has been detained for questioning in connection with the shooting incident. However, no other details about the suspect or motive have been released to the public at this time.

The Vicksburg Police Department has stated that this is an ongoing investigation. No motive has been established at this time.
