Suspended Madison County swim coach indicted for sexual battery

A Madison County swim coach has been indicted on two counts of sexual battery.

Savannah Reis worked at Madison Station Elementary School and coached for Performance Elite Aquatics, reports WLBT.

Reis husband, Fernando Reis, is head coach at Performance Elite, and the couple has four children.

The Madison County School District placed Reis on leave July 24, before the school year began. She was suspended for “allegations of misconduct” by Swimming USA, which governs swimming standards,  on Aug 2.

Mississippi law defines sexual battery of “sexual penetration” with another person without his or her consent, making the crime nearly the equivalent of rape.

“A person is guilty of sexual battery if he or she engages in sexual penetration with a child under the age of eighteen (18) years if the person is in a position of trust or authority over the child including without limitation the child’s teacher, counselor, physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, minister, priest, physical therapist, chiropractor, legal guardian, parent, stepparent, aunt, uncle, scout leader or coach,” the statute states in part.

If convicted, Reis faces up to 30 years in prison.
