SWAC to announce football cancellation Monday

The Southwestern Athletic Conference will announce the cancellation of the 2020 football season Monday.

Brett McMurphy with Stadium announced the news Friday on Twitter.

The cancellation of fall sports is due to rising COVID-19 cases that have been affecting sports nationwide.

The SWAC Conference  is close to home in Mississippi where teams from historically black colleges and universities fight for the championship each year. Mississippi SWAC teams include Alcorn State University, Jackson State University and Mississippi Valley State University.

The cancellation will include the big ASU versus JSU game  played each year.

Alcorn won the SWAC Championship last season

There is no official word on whether the SWAC Conference will try to play its games in the Spring of next year.
