Terry Wong has been named the VDN 2022-2023 Swim Coach of the Year.

Wong took over both the Warren Central and Vicksburg High School Swim teams this past year after the Gators’ former coach took an assistant principal position.

“I approached the athletics director at the time and the principal and told them that if it was possible for me to coach both teams, then we could make it happen,” Wong said.

Wong quickly took on the task of coaching both teams, where the Gators and Vikings had successful seasons. Five out of eight Gators went to state, and 13 out of the 18 Vikings also made it to the state competition under Wong’s leadership.

“We all had the same goals and cheered for each other, which made the transition to having both teams fairly easy,” Wong said.

Highlights from the season included WC’s Mateo Byrd qualifying for state in every swimming event and the VHS relays advancing to North State. Additionally, multiple swimmers beat their personal best times.

“Having a dedication to the craft” is something that Wong always preached to his athletes.

As Wong prepares his team for the next season, both crews are gaining numbers in their roster.

“We’re going to put every single swimmer on the podium no matter which school they attend,” Wong said.

Wong is the second coach to receive this award since its inception last year after Jon Graham won.

“It’s an honor to be thought of, and a lot of people may look at it and ask why me? But it’s really a product of the swimmers that I have because they come and check in, and I just motivate, but they really motivate themselves,” Wong said.
