The River City Rescue Mission helps people in surprising ways

The River City Rescue Mission in Vicksburg has been helping people in need for years. Sometimes, that help manifests itself in unexpected ways.

The Rescue Mission is a non-profit, Christian based, drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. They also offer temporary housing for men who need assistance in recovery and aim to offer them the tools they need to succeed. In addition to offering shelter and healing, the Mission uses an outreach program to provide food to the hungry. They assist families with basic needs like clothing and household essentials.

While the Rescue Mission works hard to help people overcome addiction and keep food on the table, they also run a thrift shop. Aside from clothing and furniture, the thrift store always has a wide assortment of unique nick-knacks and heirlooms. A trip inside could easily lead to a surprising find. Chris Burks was there with his family back in September when he made a very interesting discovery.

Burks went in with his wife and kids to do some shopping. His children led him to the toy section first, as children often do, and he began to browse. His wife was around the corner looking at the framed photos when he heard her shout, “Chris! Come here! I think something is wrong.” He made his way to her and noticed she was holding a photo, but it wasn’t just any photo. It was an old photo of his mother, uncle and granddad from his mother’s wedding day. Burks was shocked to see the photo and admittedly had no clue how it could have gotten there.

Burks couldn’t believe he was holding such a cherished photo of loved ones who he dearly missed. After losing his mother earlier in the year, he noted that he was very excited when he found this memory of her. Upon taking it home he was quite overcome with emotion. The photo is now something he and his family now have to enjoy and look back on for a lifetime. It just goes to show that one never knows what wonderful artifacts are waiting to be found at the River City Rescue Mission.

The Mission is located at 3705 Washington Street. The thrift store hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Rescue Mission is open 24/7. If you or someone you know may be in need of their assistance, you can call their number at 601-636-6602.
