A car thief is behind bars Monday after stealing a truck and attempting to evade law enforcement.

Just before 5:30 p.m., Joe Edwards and his son watched as a thief made off with his Dodge Ram pickup that was parked at his residence on Highway 27.  Both men reacted immediately, with one calling 911 and the other grabbing his sidearm and attempting to stop the theft, but did not reach the truck in time.

The stolen truck was recovered, unfortunately, a little worse for wear (photo by David Day).

The dispatcher immediately put a call out to law enforcement with a description of the stolen truck.  Nearby, Deputy Dustin Keyes heard the call and anticipated being able to intercept the thief from his location near the Beechwood intersection.  Moments later, Keyes spotted the Ram and got behind it.

Approaching the busy Beechwood intersection with the Sheriffs deputy on his tail, the thief failed to yield at the traffic light and caused a wreck that injured himself and another driver.  He then ran on foot and was quickly captured by deputies.

The driver that was injured in the wreck, along with one of the deputies, are being treated at Merit Health River Region for minor injuries.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said that the thief was exercising his right to remain silent and was not carrying identification.
