Working in public service can be a tough and stressful experience. However, those such as Lieutenant Brad Wilson find the reward of helping others well worth it.

Wilson began his career with the Vicksburg Fire Department on Jan. 23, 2013, unsure of where he wanted to be. Though his great-grandfather worked for the department in the early 1900s, Wilson was more influenced by the experiences of others who worked there.

“It seemed like an interesting occupation to get into and I can say it’s definitely been interesting, for sure,” said Wilson. “I ended up going to EMT school first. I didn’t know where I wanted to go from there but I ended up coming to the fire department.”

Joining the fire department gave Wilson many opportunities to shape his career path.

“Once you start here, there are other opportunities,” said Wilson. “We’ve had guys that have gone to paramedic school, went on to nursing, and got into other fields where the resume from the fire department helped them to get into other occupations.”

Wilson’s career has led him to become a firefighter and paramedic. He currently serves as a fire medic on both ambulance and fire trucks. While the job has not always been easy, he has no doubts he is where he needs to be.

“A lot of these calls can be stressful, they stick with you for a little while,” said Wilson. “You roll with it. Those calls where you truly feel like you help somebody, it’s rewarding. It reaffirms I am in the right field.”
