Two men were captured Wednesday after leading Vicksburg police officers on a vehicle pursuit that ended in a brief foot chase in which one of the suspects was tased.

Vicksburg Police narcotics officers Jeff Merritt and Donnie Heggins received a tip that a man wanted on warrants, Alton Burden, Sr., 51, was in the area of Drummond and Division Streets. The unmarked unit watched as the vehicle Burden was in, a gray Chevy Equinox, turned onto Division and headed towards Halls Ferry. Burden had outstanding warrants for two counts of armed robbery, three counts of burglary and four counts of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Burden was the back seat passenger in the Equinox driven by his brother, Channing Burden, 42. An unnamed female was in the front passenger seat.

The officers followed the Equinox from a distance and watched as the vehicle turned east onto Military Avenue from Halls Ferry. While on Military Avenue, at 2:24 p.m., a marked unit driven by Adam-55, Matt Barnes, attempted to stop the Equinox. The Equinox failed to stop and continued on at a slow speed for a short time. The Equinox then tried to speed away from the marked unit, leading officers on a car chase through Marcus Bottom.

The Equinox fled east on Military, then south on Grant, west on Royal, south on Ken Karyl, west on Confederate, north and then west on James E. Stirgus (formerly Marcus Street) and then turned south on Alma and finally east on Ethel where the driver stopped the vehicle in front of the house at 1523 Ethel. Alton Burden, Sr. jumped from the backseat and ran behind the house with Heggins in pursuit on foot.

The driver, Channing Burden, stayed with the vehicle and was taken into custody at 2:31 p.m. without incident by Jeff Merritt. The female passenger was detained.

Alton Burden, Sr. continued to flee west behind the homes on Ethel and was finally tased and stopped at 2:32 p.m. by Heggins just west of the residence at 1515 Ethel Street.

Channing Burden will be charged with felony eluding for failure to stop. Additionally, a small amount of narcotics were found near the vehicle and officers suspect more was thrown from the vehicle as they fled from Barnes.

The female passenger has not been charged at this time.
