Two young women from Vicksburg High School placed second in their last powerlifting meet on Saturday, Feb. 1.

Vijae Flaggs and Makyia Adams are the remaining women on the team who will compete in the next competition in a few weeks on the road to naming champions for the region and the state. Both ladies are freshmen at VHS, and they are both hoping to get stronger in the years to come.

Vicksburg High offensive lineman football coach Andre Bennett is in his second season as the girl’s powerlifting coach for the Gators. The young women compete primarily against girls from Jackson area schools from grades 9-12.

”I love competing mostly and getting stronger so I can become first in my weight class,” Flaggs said.

Adams is also committed to bettering herself when it comes to powerlifting.

”My goal is to be able to deadlift 300 pounds and also become first in my weight class,” she said.

During the football season, Adams and Flaggs train with coach Bubba Nettles but they switch and train with Bennett once the season ends.

Bennett is no stranger to hard training, as he was a former All American football player at Grambling State University, and the experience helps him train the girls to gain their true strength and meet their goals.
