Umpire suspended indefinitely after controversial strike three call against Mims

P.J. Mims

An umpire has been suspended after a controversial call made against Vicksburg native P.J. Mims.

Mims, who plays baseball for Mississippi Valley State University, was batting on Friday against New Orleans when Umpire Reggie Drummer called a strike which appeared to be a ball, and that forced Mims to question the call. The next pitch was clearly thrown to the outside but Drummer called it a strike three which left New Orleans as the the winner of the game with a 7-3 final.

Mims got even more frustrated due to the strikeout to where his teammates and the opposing team had to calm him down.

After the video went viral over social media, the  Southland Conference suspended Drummer indefinitely and released a statement.

“The Southland Conference is committed to promoting and enforcing the principles and standards of good sporting conduct in connection with all Conference activities involving our member institutions, including competition againstnon-conference opponents. The Conference expects this conduct to be upheld by all game participants.”

“After a thorough review of the New Orleans and Mississippi Valley State baseball contest on March 10, 2023, the Southland Conference confirmed the home plate umpire’s conduct and actions were deemed detrimental to the
Conference and in violation of Section 3 Character and Conduct of the CA Mechanics Manual for Baseball. As a result, the umpire has been removed from the series and has been suspended indefinitely from Southland
Conference baseball games.”

“The conference will have no further comment.”
