Whether you are fishing, swimming or boating, water safety should be the first priority before enjoying your Fourth of July weekend.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Vicksburg District is urging those who plan to engage in water activities to remember to stay safe and practice water safety, including wearing a life jacket.

Commander Colonel Robert Hilliard recently promoted a video on behalf of the district which expresses the importance of practicing water safety.

“Every year we find that most drownings could have been prevented by a victim wearing a life jacket,” stated Hilliard in the safety video. “It’s always a good idea to play it safe.”

Hilliard also states that many victims are intoxicated at the time of death and urges the public to designate a sober vessel driver if anyone plans to be drinking.
