MAIN MENU

The main menu is located just below our logo and is used to navigate the areas of the site where you will find news stories.  Think of it like the sections of a printed newspaper. Home:  This is the page that shows up when you first click into VicksburgDailyNews.com.  This will contain stories from multiple categories.  The last story we post to the site will show up first on the list, so you will always see the latest news at the top of the page.  We have multiple people reporting so there may be a birthday announcement posted above an important news story.  This is to be expected.  If there is an extremely pressing story, we will categorize it as “sticky” – which means, simply, that the story will remain at the top of the page until the situation has eased a bit.  This post will be “sticky” for a couple of days. The other pages are, as I said, like sections of a newspaper, but there is one in particular that I want to be able to define a little better for everyone.  We hear constantly that we don’t have any sports or more national news or… well you get the picture.  We launched this site with the intention of showing it off to our friends and family and letting them take it for a test drive before we launched it to the rest of the world….  God had other plans.  The inundation we got from our friends sharing the site has been a blessing and a curse.  We’ve got a staff of three and an extremely small budget right now.  We counteracted the inundation of people on the site by inundating them with news. Go to the “NewsFeeds” section of the site to find LOTS… and I do mean LOTS… of news.  You’ll have to click on the headline to reach the feeds but once you have, you’ll have the latest ten stories from each of the news services we are able to link to.  I’ll elaborate a little further. When you pick up a copy of the local printed paper and begin to peruse the stories, you’ll see many of them that begin with NAME OF CITY – (AP) This means that they were able to pull the story from the Associated Press (AP), a news organization that has worldwide respect and notoriety.  Nobody from the local paper wrote the story, it is simply reprinted from the AP.  This is only legal if they (the local paper) pay the AP for the privilege of using their stories – which drives overhead up and therefore drives prices up for the end consumer (you), We are not able to pay for a subscription to any of these news services at this point in time, so, what we have done is what is legal and fair.  We have linked to their news feeds, which will take you away from our site and take you straight to theirs. A “FEED” or “RSS Feed” (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.  An RSS document (which is called a “feed”, “web feed”, or “channel”) includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an “RSS reader”, “feed reader”, or “aggregator”, which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. This allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed’s URI or by clicking a feed icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. RSS allows users to avoid manually inspecting all of the websites they are interested in, and instead subscribe to websites such that all new content is pushed onto their browsers when it becomes available. We hope that we’ve been able to help those of you who are having difficulty getting around our site.  If you are still having trouble, or you see something that needs to be corrected, please click on the CONTACT link at the top of the page and let us know how we can help. We thank all of you for reading VicksburgDailyNews.com and hope that you will come back often… make us your home page… definitely add us to your Favorites or Bookmarks…. and tell the people you do business with where you find your news – not history – for FREE!]]]]> ]]>
