USM defeated Alcorn 40-14 in their season opener

The University of Southern Mississippi started their season off right with a 40-14 win over Alcorn State University on Saturday.

B.J. Wiley made his debut as the starting quarterback where he threw for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He would connect with Tyquan Henderson, Frank Gore Jr. and Jakarius Caston for touchdowns. Frank Gore Jr. managed to find the end zone again after running the ball for a 9-yard score.

By halftime, USM was up 27-7 and eventually came out scoring in the second half.

Caston finished with 104 receiving yards and a touchdown while Latreal Jones added 68 receiving yards for USM.

Defensively, Jay Stanley caught two interceptions for the Golden Eagles while Robert McDaniel caught one for the Braves. Edwin Summerour and Terreance Ellis both led Alcorn with 11 tackles.

USM will travel to Florida State on Saturday and the Braves will hit the road to face Stephen F. Austin.
