VHS took a 10-6 loss to Germantown
The Vicksburg High School football team took a 10-6 loss on Friday night in the Red Carpet Bowl against Germantown.
The Gators came out with a strong run game but ultimately a fumble would cause a disruption.
The Mavericks hit VHS with a screen that went for a 40 yard touchdown as they went up 7-0.
The hard fought game consisted of VHS picking up good rushing yards but not able to find the end zone when they needed it the most. DeCorey Knight Jr, Malik Montgomery, and Cedric Blackmore all picked up some key first downs.
VHS also switched things a few times as quarterback Ronnie Alexander was able to hit Tyler Henderson a few times on some major catches.
A blocked punt in the second quarter would be crucial for the Gators which put the Mavericks at the one yard line. It was no surprise that the Gator defense held up with Demarcus Johnson and Caleb Bryant punishing some rushers that forced Germantown to kick a field goal which was no good.
Johnny Smith got a 10 yard touchdown but was called back due to a false start. Tyler Carter also got a pass deflections as the score remained 7-0 at halftime.
The game relied heavily on defense and Germantown was able to knock down a 43 yard field goal to go up 10-0 in the second half. VHS would eventually respond with a 80 yard touchdown pass from Alexander to Henderson with 11 minutes left.
The Gators were unable to punch it in again on offense as the final score sat at 10-6.
Henderson had 96 yards on four catches and a touch while Montgomery led in rushing with 92 yards. Kearris Gilliam caught an interception on the night blasted the Mavericks quarterback one good time.
