Vicksburg firefighers were on the scene of a house fire Thursday around 3 p.m. on Ken Karyl Avenue.

Fire Chief Craig Danczyk said the homeowner basically had the fire under control when firefighters arrived, but his team is making sure no lingering sparks remain to reignite the fire and are investigating its cause.

“Apparently, the homeowner did a pretty solid job extinguishing the fire,” Danczyk said. Regardless, the chief said she did the right thing in calling 911. There is minimal damage to the structure.

No one was injured in the fire.

According to Chief Danczyk, “It appears spontaneous combustion is the cause of this fire. Fertilizer, straw, compost soil and plant remains got hot enough to combust. I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened in my career.”
