The Vicksburg High boy’s basketball team won a close game Tuesday night as they defeated Provine 66-61.
Taylon Smith led the way for the Gators victory as he scored an impressive 29 points to help secure the win for VHS.
At the end of the first quarter, the Gators were trailing 15-14 to Provine, and they devised a plan to get more points on the board.
In the second quarter, both teams put up nearly the same amount of points as they did in the first quarter, but the Gators had a razor-thin 1-point lead at the half with the score 30-29.
Both the Gator offense and defense stepped up in the third quarter. It was tough for Provine to shut down key VHS players such as Smith and Peytin Jackson. Jackson put up 12 points along with five rebounds on the night. At the end of the third, the Gators led 55-43.
Sean Hardy added 8 points on the night for the Gators, and Cameron Butler dropped 10 points to help the Gators (14-7) overcome Provine (11-12).
Although Provine’s offense stepped up in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to defeat Vicksburg as the Gators won 66-61.
