The Vicksburg High School girl’s basketball team is the only team still playing in the city, and they are preparing to play in the state semi-finals at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson tomorrow.

The Gators defeated Neshoba Central on Saturday with a 42-36 victory. Tiara Jones and Yakia Burns led the team with 11 points each.

Tomorrow, the Gators will face Brookhaven (27-3) who has been a tough opponent for every team they have played this season. Brookhaven blew out plenty of teams, but they only defeated the Gators by two points earlier in the year.

With the help of key players such as Jones, Burns and Destiny Sims, the Gators should have no problem pulling off a victory against Brookhaven. A win tomorrow means they have an excellent shot at the state championship.

On Monday, the day before their big game, the Gators took the time to read to students at Sherman Avenue Elementary in Vicksburg for the “Read Across America” initiative.

The semi-final game will be held at the Mississippi Coliseum (1207 Mississippi St., Jackson) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
