One of the key players to Vicksburg High School’s basketball team, Peytin Jackson, has made the decision to play on the next level at Tougaloo College.

Under head coach Kelvin Carter, Jackson helped the Gators to a 20-10 record this past season and a spot in the playoffs.

Peytin averaged 11.3 points per game this season, helping the Gators to many victories. In a game against Northwest Rankin, Jackson put up 23 points, which was his best performance this season. Another of Jackson’s highlights was when he hit the game-winning shot against Ridgeland High School as time expired, to give the Gators a 59-58 win.

With the growth of Jackson’s basketball skills over the past few years, college scouts came to see his athleticism and eventually, his skills led him to receive a full ride to Tougaloo.

”I’m thankful for the opportunity.” he said. “Honestly, not many get this opportunity. I appreciate all the coaches that helped me get to this level. I appreciate all the friends and family that supported me through this time.

“I’m going there to study computer science. I think this is a great field, and I’m ready to see what opportunities it opens up for me.”

At Tougaloo, Jackson will soon be playing for legendary head coach Thomas Billups who started off coaching in Vicksburg High and later coached at Lanier High School in Jackson where he won eight state championships. Jackson joins a great team that now has a 22-6 record.

A ceremony will be held for Jackson at VHS today at 9 a.m.
