April 22, 2021 marks the 51st anniversary of Earth Day, and Vicksburg residents are welcome to celebrate.

The idea for Earth Day was first proposed in 1969 by Gaylord Nelson, a senator from the state of Wisconsin. This came after the mayor of New York, John V. Lindsay, created the first municipal Environmental Protection Administration.

The first Earth Day took place in 1970, where an estimated 20 million people took part. Support for Earth Day grew more than anyone imagined and by the end of 1970, the Nixon administration established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and passed the Clean Air Act.

The time has come again to celebrate our planet and in honor of this, there will be a community clean-up day in the City of Vicksburg.

On Thursday, April 22 from 8:30 a.m. until noon, Washington Street Park will be welcoming volunteers to help join the tradition and get their elbows dirty. Assignments and supplies will be handed out at the park.

The event is for all ages. Businesses and groups are welcome to join in.
