Circuit Court Judge James Chaney sentenced Vicksburg resident Johnny Wayne Nevels to serve 31 years behind bars earlier this week.

Nevels, 50, was indicted in November 2017 on three counts of possession of a controlled substance. He was charged as a habitual offender because of two previous felony convictions.

Chaney sentenced Nevels to eight years each on two counts, and 20 years on the third count, with 15 years to serve and 5 years post-release parole. The three sentences are to be served consecutively.

Nevels was also fined $5,000, which he must repay if he is released.
