Vicksburg National Military Park recently announced the return of Junior Ranger Summer Camp with a noticeable difference. It is now Junior Ranger Days.

Junior Ranger Days are just like the Junior Ranger Summer Camp, only the days are spaced out into six sessions once a week. All the programs from the classic camp session are still there.

The summer program provides the opportunity for the youth to participate in educational activities which is designed to spark interest in the park’s history, natural and cultural resources and show the value of the Vicksburg National Military Park.

The program is free but limited to 20 persons per session. All Junior Rangers must be between the ages 8 — 12 and must be registered to attend. Registration deadline is midnight on Wednesday, June 16. There will be a lottery system in place to choose participants. Winning participants will be notified by Friday, June 18. Those wishing to register can sign up for one, or all days. The registration link can be found here.

The program schedule released by the Vicksburg National Military Park is as follows:

  • June 24 — The Civil War Garden with the Warren County Master Gardeners
  • July 1 — A Soldier’s Life for Me!
  • July 8 — Biology on the Battlefield
  • July 15 — A Sailor’s Life for Me!
  • July 22 — Recording the Landscape: Plein Air Watercolors on the Battlefield
  • July 29 — Ranger for a Day Search and Rescue Program

CDC recommendations will be followed. Those not fully vaccinated will be required to wear masks indoors and in crowded spaces, with masks being required of anyone on public transit. All events will be hosted outdoors. For more information please visit www.nps.gov/coronavirus.
