Vicksburg native becomes Space Force’s 721st Operations Support Squadron’s new commander

Vicksburg native, Lieutenant Colonel Etan Funches has become the new 721st Operations Support Squadron’s commander for Space Force.

The change in command was officiated by Col. John G. Thein, Delta 3 Space Electronic Warfare commander at Peterson Air Force Base on June 18. Lt. Col. Matthew S. Thompson stood relieved as Funches assumed command.

Space Delta 3’s responsibilities lie in executing premiere Space Electronic Warfare via sustainable operations, seeking to dominate the space domain.

Funches began his military career with the United states Air Force in July of 2011 and became a member of the Space Force in March of 2020.

Funches is a 2006 graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he obtained a degree in Political Science and International Relations. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma, the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (AFROTC) and participated in USM’s track and field program.

In 2011, Funches trained at the United States Air Force (USAF) Weapons School, then achieved a Masters of Strategic Intelligence in 2014 from the American Military University. His education extended to USAF Air command and Staff College where he earned a Masters of Military Operational Art and Science degree, and a Masters of Philosophy at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies in 2019.
