In Monday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. proposed that the city hire a special officer to police businesses’ adherence to COVID-19 restrictions.

Concerned about the rising number of new cases in Warren County and Vicksburg, the Mayor is considering how best to enforce the restrictions. He proposed that first-time violators receive a warning. Second and subsequent violations will be fined $1,000 as has been mandated in the city’s COVID-19 proclamations.

The board took no action on the proposal.

They also had a lengthy discussion on creating an ordinance to make mask wearing mandatory within the city limits.

“It is not enforceable,” Flaggs said. “It will make a mockery of the law.”

No ordinance on masks was adopted.
