Vicksburg Police Department Investigator Jerrold Hayes spoke on Friday on an ongoing investigation to locate individuals responsible for the use of hot checks.

“On Dec. 29, 2022, officers responded to a local business here within the City of Vicksburg,” said Hayes. “Once officers made contact with the complainants, we noticed and were aware an operation was taking place involving fraudulent checks.”

From there, the investigation was passed to the Criminal Investigation Division as well as the Narcotics Division.

“Once we obtained the information, we followed up with it,” said Hayes. “We then went ahead and conducted our investigation and made arrests.”

The Vicksburg Police Department made a total of three arrests. Marsha Ann Reid, 66, Austin Chance Reid, 38 and Tia Reid Spencer, 43 were taken into custody on Jan. 17.

The investigation has been ongoing for a “couple of weeks” according to Hayes and it is suspected that “many” more individuals may be involved.

Hays also stated the department is aware that many businesses may have been affected.

“We ask that if you have any information and you believe your business may have been targeted by any of these individuals, to contact the police department at 601-636-2511,” said Hayes.
