The New Year’s holiday was a noisy but relatively safe celebration for residents of Vicksburg, reports Capt. Mike Bryant of the Vicksburg Police Department.

Officers arrested four individuals on misdemeanor charges of discharging a firearm within the city limits: Ewell Blackmore, 45; Lamarshal Davis, 26; Walter Dolley, 51; and John Qualls, 30. Police confiscated five firearms from the suspects, all four of whom are Vicksburg residents.

All four have been released on bonds of $672.50 each. They are scheduled for arraignment on Jan.16. If convicted, each could spend up to 30 days in jail and be fined up to $500.

VPD also responded to nine motor vehicle accidents during the same period, one of which was a hit and run. Two of the accidents caused injuries, but there were no fatalities.

Most calls to police between 12:01 a.m. Dec. 31, 2019, and 7 a.m. Jan. 2, 2020, were fireworks complaints. Officers responded to 24 complaints.
