Vicksburg residents escaped injury after a grilling error ignited their home.

At 3:11 a.m., firefighters were alerted to a structure fire in the 100 block of Elms Court. FD1, BC1, E2, E8, L3, Rescue and FM20 responded to the call.

Flames were visible from Porter’s Chapel Road. The garage and a vehicle were fully involved upon the arrival of firefighters.

Firefighters were able to douse the flames, but half of the home was severely damaged. A ruptured fuel tank contributed to the fire which spread in the garage area. The vehicle was a total loss.

An investigation of the fire revealed that the ignition was caused by hot coals that were being used for grilling. The coals were in a bucket and sat too close to a wall within the garage.

Fortunately, occupants of the home managed to safely evacuate without any injuries.
