Vicksburg is no stranger to domestic violence

Domestic violence is a severe problem in the United States, and Vicksburg, Mississippi, is no exception.
According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 10 million people are affected by domestic violence each year in America. However, the actual number of cases is likely much higher, as many victims are afraid to speak up or don’t know where to turn for help.
In September 2022, Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. designated the month of October as “Domestic Violence Awareness Month.” In Vicksburg, MS, crime rates have been decreasing in various categories. However, one category of crime has seen an increase- domestic violence.
Statistics show that during the 2020-2021 period, there were 227 cases of domestic violence. During the 2021-2022 period, there have been 318 cases reported. This notable increase has Vicksburg police honing increased efforts to ensure the safety of its residents and tourists
Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced the launch of a new tool for law enforcement and courts statewide. Used for reporting and updating domestic violence incidents, this tool helps the community in various ways. The Domestic Violence Reporting System (DVRS) is an online repository for information on domestic violence incidents, including victim information, offender information, and case disposition.
The DVRS will help law enforcement and prosecutors to identify habitual offenders and better track cases of domestic violence. In addition, the DVRS will provide valuable data that can be used to develop prevention and intervention programs. Attorney General Fitch stated that the DVRS is a critical step in the fight against domestic violence, and she thanked the many agencies and individuals who have worked to make it a reality.
Fortunately, many organizations in Vicksburg work to raise awareness about domestic violence and provide support for victims and their families. The Haven’s House offers a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. In addition, the Vicksburg Police Department has a dedicated Domestic Violence Unit that investigates reports of abuse and helps connect victims with resources.
