A Vicksburg teenager, accused of the murder of Ethan Powell, has been indicted by the Warren County Grand Jury.

Kemond Jones, a then 15-year-old Vicksburg resident, faces the charge of murder in the shooting death of Ethan Powell. Jones stands accused of shooting Powell multiple times after an argument which ultimately resulted in Powell’s death.

The initial call arrived just three minutes after midnight on Sep. 7, 2020, reporting shots fired on Abraham Drive. Within minutes, Warren County deputies were on scene to find 18-year-old Powell laying on the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Powell was transported to Merit Health River Region by Vicksburg Fire Department paramedics for treatment, but eventually died as a result of those injuries. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey pronounced Powell deceased about an hour after Powell was transported.

Later that day, Jones turned himself in to Warren County authorities, accompanied by family members. Though the investigation was ongoing,  Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace told the Vicksburg Daily News that authorities were confident that Jones was responsible for Powell’s death and under Mississippi statute, Jones would be tried as an adult..

The following day, Jones was arraigned in the Warren County Justice Court and was set a $1 million bond by Judge Ed Woods. On Sep. 21, 2020, Jones’s attorney, Marvin Sanders, petitioned the court for a bond reduction. A $200,000 bond was agreed to, under the condition that Jones wear an ankle monitor. Jones was released on bail the following afternoon.
