This week’s Pet of the Week is the unexpected tabby hero, “Fat Yellow Man.”

Yellow Man’s owner, Steve Kozbiel said, “This pretty boy adopted us.” At first, Kozbiel was apprehensive to welcome Yellow Man into his home, but an act of heroism merited the courageous cat a special place in the hearts of the people he now calls family. “I tried my best to run him off because he charged our Doxie not once, but twice in our backyard upon his introducing himself to us.” Kozbiel elaborated, “He slept in a box on my boat under the carport for a couple of months. He wanted to come in but I refused. I had an indoor cat for 21 years and I had decided my days of cleaning a litter box were over.”

The family began to call him, “Fat Yellow Man,” and allowed him to take space in their yard until an unexpected event gave Yellow Man the opportunity to prove his worth. Kozbiel said, “One afternoon, my granddaughter and our Doxie were in our backyard when a neighbor’s Pit Bull and German Shepherd ran into the backyard and were trying to attack our Doxie. This Ole laid back loving boy (Fat Yellow Man) heard the commotion and came from the front porch around back to investigate.” What happened next made Kozbiel realize that the love of this cat could overcome his desire to avoid ever cleaning another litter box again.

Kozbiel continued, “He lazily sauntered through the gate, entering our backyard, surveying the situation. He took off at a dead run and jumped, landing between our Doxie and her attackers. He whipped those two dogs in an unbelievable display of bravery and cat fashion, (ultimately) saving our dog’s life.” That was the moment Kozbiel knew that this connection between Fat Yellow Man and his family was simply meant to be.

Finally, Kozbiel stated, “I let [him] move in the house that day. He won our hearts and we love him so much.” It’s true that animals really do have a way of coming into our lives and doing amazing things when we least expect them to. Sometimes they find us when we don’t even know we need them. Fat Yellow Man did his part and now he will remain a part of the Kozbiel family for the rest of his happy cat life.
