The icy temperatures set records across the nation yesterday and today, with temperatures dipping below freezing as far south as the Gulf Coast.

In Mississippi, the National Weather Service in Jackson is reporting four cities with record cold for Nov. 13: Greenville, Greenwood, Jackson and Meridian.

The longest-standing record broken this morning was for Jackson. The previous record of 23 degrees was set in 1907, 112 years ago. Temperatures there dropped to 22 degrees early this morning.

Vicksburg’s temperatures also dropped to 22 degrees at 6:38 this morning, tying for the second coldest temperature on record for this day. The coldest Nov. 13 in Vicksburg was 21 degrees, set in 1950. Temperatures today gradually began rising just after 7 a.m.

This morning’s arctic blast was still seven degrees warmer than the record cold for the month of November in Vicksburg. On Nov. 19, 1951, thermometers dropped to 15 degrees.

That year also saw the all-time low temperature recorded in the city since such records began to be recorded in 1850. On Feb. 2, 1951, an unbelievable temperature of 12 degrees below zero was recorded in Vicksburg.
