Vicksburg firefighter Captain Jabaris McDaniel freed 9 people, including an infant, from a stuck elevator.

The dramatic scene unfurled at the Vicksburg Convention Center just after Vicksburg High School had their graduation that went off without a hitch. 9 people that were leaving the event got on the elevator to the main floor from the convention floor. The elevator malfunctioned and dropped, softly, to the basement level of the Convention Center.

Several units with the fire department were on the scene but were not familiar with the scenario. The Rescue unit, a specially equipped truck with highly trained personnel also arrived on the scene. Maintenance units with the Convention Center were working to open the door when Captain McDaniel showed up. McDaniel had dealt with the situation before and was able to open the door soon after arriving.

The nine occupants of the elevator were uninjured and in good spirits, albeit a bit warm from the entrapment.

McDaniel was promoted to Captain on May 10, 2023, 9 days ago.
