Area firefighters will be participating in a 5K walk Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Vicksburg National Military Park.

The walk is in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice Sept. 11, 2001, and those who have perished in the line of duty since.

Firefighters will gather at 5 p.m., and they will be walking in full turn out gear.

The walk is also a fundraiser for the Steven Sillars Tunnels to Towers Foundation. The foundation builds homes for veterans and  families of fallen first responders  across the country. To learn more visit www.tunnel2towers.org.

The public is invited to come out and support the firefighters. If you can’t participate in the actual walk, there is a virtual option. The cost to enter is $25, and you will receive a commemorative race medal. You can also purchase event T-shirts. Entry costs are tax deductible.

To participate in the virtual race and receive a race medal, go to the Run Fierce website.

The walk is organized by Shane Garrard, Vicksburg Warren 911 director and Northeast fire chief, and Kayla Riggs, deputy state fire marshal.
