Video shows the immediate aftermath of barge strike
Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace says that a northbound tow boat was turned by the current and struck both Mississippi River bridges at Vicksburg. Multiple barges broke free and were carried south by the current.
The tow boat is the Captain Bucklay owned by Memco Barge Lines. There was no hazardous cargo on board. The same boat hit the bridges in 2013.
The old Mississippi Bridge is currently closed to railway traffic. Sheriff Pace says the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Louisiana State Police are en route to assess the damage, and a decision will be made shortly regarding traffic on the Interstate 20 structure.
