VIDEO: Underwater fire in the Gulf of Mexico boils to the surface
A rupture in an undersea gas pipeline west of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula early Friday gave birth to an incredible sight as flames erupted through the water’s surface in the Gulf of Mexico resembling an eye of fire.
A state-owned oil company in Mexico, Pemex, has since confirmed the incident is over after five hours of efforts to bring the blaze under control. The company stated that boats were used to pump water and nitrogen over the fire. Pemex has a long history of recording major accidents at its facilities.
No injuries were reported as a result of the unusual and unique incident.
