VJHS boys and girl’s basketball team defeated WCJHS on Monday

Vicksburg Jr. High girls and boys basketball team each got victories over Warren Central Jr. High on Monday night in their big rivalry game.
The Missy Gators, under head coach Tori McPhearson, trailed the Lady Vikes during most of the game. WC went up 7-3 by halftime with Azaria Wilson made some key shots for WC early on.
Going into the fourth quarter, WC was up 17-9 when the Missy Gators made a crucial comeback. A couple of shots by Jordan Grace and a major layup by Saudia Stewart would tie the game up at 19 and force things to go into overtime.
VJHS dominated in OT with Jada Erwin knocking down some big free throws and a tough defense by the Missy Gators which led to a 26-19 win.
Stewart led the Missy Gators with eight points followed by Grace who had seven. Kennedi McKay led WC with six on the night while Kelsey Snowden and Wilson added four under head coach Latoya Lumpkin.
The boy’s game also had a rocky start at the beginning, with WC taking a 8-6 lead over VJHS.
The game eventually got tied at 13 in the second quarter, until Donovin Brown knocked down a three to give the Gators a 16-13 lead. From that point, VJHS took over the court and went up 23-14 at halftime.
Mikey Johnson showed out with a 25 point performance. Nine of his points came from the three point line. The Gators went up 42-19 at the end of the third quarter.
Marlon Foy scored 10 for VJHS and JT Gaines added seven.
Micah Moore led WCJHS with seven points and Caleb Lane added five under head coach Charles Swartz.
VJHS managed to heel an outstanding lead and won 49-24 under head coach Jerdon Hardiman.
